History: First developed by Eclectic
physicians in the mid-1800s, this remedy was used by American physicians
until its use faded (along with all herbal medicines) in the 1940s.
Action: Agreeable antacid and antidiarrheal. A mild
laxative (in large doses). Tones and soothes stomach and intestines
and promotes normal action. Stimulates appetite. Carminative (relieves
flatulence).
Uses: Indicated in fermentative and irritating
conditions of the stomach and intestine: sour stomach, burning
belches or vomiting; indigestion, especially with decomposed food; sour,
fermented stools; watery or irritating diarrhea, diarrhea of undigested
food, children's summer diarrhea, traveler's diarrhea, and dysentery;
mucoenteritis.
In large doses it acts as a soothing laxative that is especially indicated
to cleanse the intestinal tract of sour, decomposed material.
Neutralizing Cordial's agreeable Peppermint and Cinnamon flavor, and
its mild action, make it an ideal remedy for children in the above conditions.
Dose: As a soothing corrective, take 40 to 80 drops
(1 to 2 one-ounce droppers), two to four times per day. For more severe
diarrhea drops can be taken every 1/2 hour, hour, or 2 hours.
As a mild laxative, usually a tablespoonful diluted in a cup of water
is sufficient to clear intestines.
Children: Adjust above adult doses according to child’s
body weight (see Clark’s Rule, pg. 149).
Adjunct Therapy: For severe diarrhea add 30 to 40 drops
of Wild Geranium Extract to above doses. For extreme lack of stomach
or intestinal tone add 30 to 40 drops of Prickly
Ash Extract or 15 to 20 drops of Cayenne
Extract to the above doses.
For sharp colicky pains add 30 to 40 drops of Ginger
Extract to the above doses.
Children: Adjust above adult doses according to child’s
body weight (see ).
Cautions: Consult a qualified midwife or physician
before taking during pregnancy. Some of the above conditions could indicate
serious health problems that require treatment by a qualified healthcare
practitioner -- especially if there is fever, blood in the stool, or
other symptoms that are severe or persistent.
Large or laxative doses should not be used for more than three days,
and should be avoided during pregnancy or if there is abdominal pain
or diarrhea.
